(just one from my small collection)
(start to my budding journalist career..?..)
Kevin
In the mountains I often will wander, down pathways through forests of green.
To seek out the stillness and ponder the message of muses unseen.
When my heart is lonely and crying,
when the pain reaches down to my soul,
When all that I live for is dying,
the mountains can make me feel whole.
Memories of mountains, memories of you.
Memories of all that is good and is true.
The mountains help guide me,
and bring you inside me.
The mountains bring memories of you.
We've hiked in the mountains together, hand-in-hand to a place in the sun.
To dream of a day called forever, to dream of a new life begun.
We've shared in the endless horizons.
We've listened to songs of the wind.
Found God in the infinite beauty,
and known that the mountain's our kin
Memories of mountains, memories of you.
Memories of all that is good and is true.
The mountains can heal me,
and comfort and seal me.
The mountains bring memories of you.
So when I have finished my journey, and released all the memories inside.
Then the mountains will give me my silence, and offer a place to abide.
But until then my memories of mountains
will be full of the memories of you.
Of the mountains we've shared together,
and the climbing we've still left to do.
Memories of mountains, memories of you.
Memories of all that is good and is true.
The mountains help guide me,
and bring you inside me.
The mountains bring memories of you.

Follow Your Heart
Sunsets burn and stars emerge here at the end of day.
And in the darkening sky you search for a sign to show the way.
Where should you go?
What should you do?
Is there a path you can see?
Where is your place
in this uncertain world?
And who is this person called "me"?
Every day you face the world with choices you must make.
Which roads you will travel on and which you will forsake.
Will you choose the quest for fame and seek the gleam of gold?
Or will you choose to follow your heart
and all the love that it can hold?
Follow your heart, for its message is true.
Follow your heart, it won't lead you astray.
The love that you give will come back to you.
Follow your heart.
It will show you the way.
Remember that youth's innocence still dwells within us all.
It holds the key to that pure love you knew when you were small.
The love that taught you giving to those who were in need.
The love that guided each pure thought and every loving deed.
For you can know that love again.
It waits to be set it free.
So spread your wings and let love fly.
Make your love all that it can be.
Follow your heart. Reach for this goal,
Love in your life and peace in your soul.
Follow your heart, it won't lead you astray.
Follow your heart.
It will show you the way.
Follow your heart, give all you can give,
And you will know love
Every day that you live.

Friends Forever
Through the eyes of love today will never end.
Through the eyes of love the road will never bend.
Our heart believes in love that never dies.
Our dreams remain as endless as the skies.
And though I love you now, and will love you till the end,
More than that, I hope and pray you'll always be my friend.
Friends forever,
Friends together.
Always caring,
Always sharing.
Through love and pain, joy and sorrow,
We'll take today into tomorrow.
Friends forever,
Friends together,
Friends forever.
Years from now who knows, what stories life will tell.
That love can come and go, we only know too well.
But in our future I can always see,
The warmth of friendship there for you and me.
Though we may not be lovers, now or in the end.
You can count upon this promise, I will always be your friend.
Friends forever,
Friends together.
Always caring,
Always sharing.
Through the tears, down through the years.
Sharing hopes and sharing fears.
Friends forever,
Friends together.
Friends now and forever.

Listening to Angels
As falling leaves, barely heard,
a whisper soft yet clear.
Like the wind across the meadow,
tiny voices I can hear.
Faint and yet insistent,
with words to guide each deed.
They speak to me of right and wrong
and where my life should lead.
Listening to angels, it helps me find my way.
Listening to angels gives me comfort every day.
They sit upon my shoulder.
They whisper in my ear.
Listening to angels brings a message true and clear
Sometimes lost within the noise
of life's distracting din.
Only to be found again
when I finally look within.
Sometimes pushed aside by choice
when conscience cannot bear.
Until my heart hears what is right
and has the will to care.
Listening to angels helps me know what's really true.
Listening to angels helps me know just what to do.
They sit upon my shoulder.
They whisper in my ear.
Listening to angels brings a message true and clear
The voices of our angels live within us all.
They leads us to a loving path if we will heed their call.
They speak if we will listen.
If we only choose to hear.
Listening to angels brings a message true and clear

Whispers On The Wind
I'm waiting and I'm listening for Whispers on the Wind.
Whispers echoing your voice that say
"I'll be back again".
Patiently I search each day the rustling of the leaves,
or strain to hear "I still do care"
as it swirls around the eaves.
Each new dawn, each setting sun brings quiet times I spend
waiting still and listening for Whispers on the Wind.

A Christmas Wish
All the presents wrapped, all the stockings hung.
All the trees brightly lit, and all the carols sung.
As I sit before the fire and stare into the glow,
There's something I just have to say,
something you should know.
I have a Christmas Wish for you, a wish I want to share.
It comes from deep within my heart to say how much I care.
For all the times we shared this year, for all the joy we knew,
I've written down these special words,
a Christmas Wish for you.
I wish you sunny days and starry nights.
I wish you the laughter in the sun.
I wish you poetry and beauty,
and contentment when the day is done.
I wish you joy of heart and peace of soul.
I wish you blessings from above.
I wish you comfort in your times of need.
But most of all
I wish you love.
I wish you happiness throughout your days.
I wish you gentleness and tender caring ways.
I wish you the warmth of friends for times when things are rough.
But even more than this, because I care,
I wish you love.
So here at the end of the year
after all that we've been through.
These are the thoughts that fill my heart,
My Christmas Wish for you.

Recent Letter to the Editor in the Boulder Newspaper
Global Warming Hot Air
Over the past week the Daily Camera has published two letters regarding "GlobalWarming" which concern
me and must receive a response. These letters were not only troubling for their lack of scientific
accuracy, but also for their encouragement of limiting open public discourse on an important topic.
Both aspects offend my scientific training.
The basic premise of both letters was to suggest that global warming was so universally accepted as
to not warrant public debate. This is not only preposterous but flies in the face of reality on the
subject. For example, Mr. James Hansen, Director of Goddard Institute for Space Studies at NASA, and
the person who coined the term "global warming", stated recently that "The forces that drive long-term
climate change are not known with an accuracy sufficient to define future climate change." Science
magazine recently stated "Many climate experts caution that it is not at all clear yet that human
activities have begun to warm the planet. Indeed, most modelers now agree that the climate models will
not be able to link greenhouse warming unambiguously to human actions for a decade or more." Clearly,
despite the claim by readers or the current Clinton Administration that "informed opinion" universally
accepts the reality of global warming and its human causes, the scientific community still is undecided
and maintains an open mind.
The public should be aware that the current data does not square with the predictions of calamity produced
by some proponents of global warming. The case for warming is driven by ground measurements made by weather
sites located around the world, and by measurements of an increase in "greenhouse" gases such as carbon
dioxide. These ground measurements show a very slight warming trend over the last 40 years (1-2 degrees
every 100 years). However, these measurements are likely influenced by the "urban heat island" effect
(cities, with their big buildings and vast pavements, heat up more and retain heat) since many of the weather
stations are near urban areas. More reliable are years of satellite measurements, supported by over 1,000,000
weather balloon measurements, which monitor air and sea temperatures over the entire globe. These two sources
both show a slight cooling over the past 40 years and literally no temperature rise over the past 20, even with
the huge increase in human energy consumption. And most significantly, the satellite and balloon measurements
are in virtually exact agreement on their temperature measurements. It is also important to note that current
global temperatures are cooler than temperatures estimated during 5 major periods in the last 3000 years, and
are still below the average temperature during that 3000 year period.
One might ask why there is such confusion on this topic and why there is so much debate. First, as we all know,
predicting the weather, even for next week or next month is very tricky. There are millions of variables involved
in computer models to approach any accuracy. And many of these variables are not known well on a global scale.
Also, many of the models ignore some very important factors such as cloud cover, ocean absorption of carbon
dioxide, likely increases in vegetation due to increased carbon dioxide, the impact of volcanoes and other
natural sources of greenhouse gases, microorganism absorption of carbon dioxide, sun radiation fluctuations, etc.
Virtually every objective atmospheric modeler will admit that their models, though constantly improving, need many,
many years of refinement to approach any reasonable accuracy in predicting climate change.
It should be noted that scientists know even less about the impact of a temperature rise even if global warming
does occur. Claims of rising seas, droughts and deadly weather are not supported by any evidence. Some models
and supporting real data show increases in glacial activity, "greening" of the world from increased plant growth,
revival of tropical forests, increased rainfall, improved agriculture for food, increased fish populations, etc.
The point is, a warmer global climate might be a positive occurrence as opposed to a calamity.
However, one apparent impact of "global warming" is more near term and real. A recent study by the non-partisan
Wharton Economic Forecasting Associates predicts the impact of the measures in the Kyoto Treaty on Colorado (by
the year 2010) will include 29,500 fewer jobs, lower wages by 3.4%, increase in electric rates by 56%, and increase
in natural gas prices by 60% above and beyond other economic changes. Overall, income growth per person is predicted
to be $435 less by the year 2010 in Colorado if the Kyoto Treaty is implemented.
In closing, my opinion is that to understand the "global warming" furor, one should "follow the money" and the
politics. Having worked in the research community, the Federal Government, and private industry, it seems clear
to me that the claim of "environmental crisis" is made for two reason; to get more money from the government for
those doing such research, and to get more votes for politicians from the constituents who are "environmentally
conscious". The ideal crisis to do research on is one that requires decades to understand, and that my never be
proven one way or the other. Not surprisingly, the current administration has spent more than $30 million in the
past 6 years on grants to "teach" the public about the risks of "global warming". This topic deserves continued
open public discourse, and reasonable and balanced research. The Daily Camera should not heed calls for censuring
debate!
